Desert Cubs Internal Badminton Tournament 2018

The academy’s Internal Badminton Tournament was held on the 12th May 2018 at Sharjah English School courts. All Players participated in Singles and Doubles events displaying some exciting badminton. Adults too had the opportunity to participate in Men’s and Women’s Doubles. It was a fun-filled day and the children enjoyed to the maximum. The awards ceremony was graced by UAE and GCC women’s number one player Tanisha Castro. She is a classic example for the children who are intending to pursue a career in Badminton. It was a blessing for the children to grab some tips and advice from her.

I would like to thank all the coaches who organized and supported throughout the day to make this event a success.

Desert Cubs Cricket Fiesta 2018

This was the second annual Cricket Fiesta for cricket lovers in UAE and this year’s edition was opened to Under 11 and 13 age groups. The whole idea of the program was to execute a planned high performance coaching program for 5 days and in addition to provide opportunities for kids to participate in a T20 Cricket Tournament and a complementary Six-a-side – Find your Master Blaster Fun Event.

It was the perfect time for enthusiastic cricketers to practice and play their favourite sport since it was the school spring break.  We had good numbers attending this program and we were fortunate enough to get the services of dashing former World Cup winning opener Romesh Kaluwitharana to assist our kids for 3 whole days during the high performance program.  The kids were so happy to get expert coaching from Romesh who has been a live wire in Sri Lanka Cricket Board coaching programs since the time of his retirement from the international arena. His focus was mainly on batting and fielding in T20 format, which has become a major attraction amongst the cricket fraternity around the world.

The program was divided into three segments; outdoor coaching sessions, indoor theory sessions and real game scenarios in a T20 format.  The coaching program was conducted from 9am till 5pm with a lunch and a tea break and concluded with swimming pool cool down sessions. It was amazing to witness the energy levels of these budding young crickets, who were eagerly waiting to explore all the components of the program without showing any kind tiredness or laziness.

External academies such as Zayed Cricket Academy, MS Dhoni Cricket Academy, Al Etihad Sports Academy, Canadian Cricket Academy and Madina Victoria Cricket Academy also participated in the tournament. Desert Cubs Under 11 Eagles and Desert Cubs Under 13 Gold teams emerged as champions after a hard fight in the first round games and nail biting finals while MS Dhoni Cricket Academy and Madina Victoria Cricket Academy finished their stints as runners up in both the categories respectively.

The tournament concluded with a last day’s complementary Six-a-side tournament for players to have a blast on their own and to explore the hidden capabilities of extravagant power hitting. This particular tournament was won by Desert Cubs Under 11 and Ms Dhoni Cricket Academy Under 13 teams respectively. All the matches were played on grass turf wickets at Sharjah English School grounds which is one of the most picturesque venues in UAE.

Desert Cubs Swimming Talent Hunt 2018

Desert Cubs organizes two main swimming events for the season, one is the Desert Cubs Swimming Meet which is a part of the annual Sports Day and the other is the Desert Cubs Swimming Talent Hunt. Through these competitions, swimmers are motivated to invoke their competitive instincts at an early age. This year the Desert Cubs Swimming Talent Hunt 2018 took place for the 3rd consecutive year on 20th April 2018 at Sharjah English School.

We started the day with the Beginner and Intermediate events taking place in the morning, which were limited only to Desert Cubs members while the Senior events took place in the afternoon and were open to external academies in order for our senior swimmers to get their much-needed exposure by taking part in a competitive meet. This year for the very first time we had a visiting team, CH Swimming Academy from Sri Lanka. Joining them were two Dubai based swimming academies, Aqua Team and Cherish Sports.

All our swimming members were categorized into various events according to their skill level and practiced hard during a period of one month to prepare for the competition. Many of the swimmers got the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of their friends and family members and it was encouraging to also see the new joiners participate in the Beginner events with the help of swimming boards.

We witnessed a fierce competition in the Senior events held in the afternoon as each academy’s swimmers were vying for first place. CH Swimming Academy, Sri Lanka won many of the top positions while the other academies including Desert Cubs swimmers did their best to bring glory to their individual clubs.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience for all the competitors and the evening wound off with an award presentation for the best performers of the competition. We were honored to have former Olympic swimmer Ms. Sarah Lajnef as the chief guest to give away the awards. Ms. Lajnef motivated the young swimmers by telling them that nothing was impossible to achieve if you practiced regularly and worked hard.  All the swimmers were thrilled to meet her and take photographs with her, which she was most obliged to do.

Desert Cubs would like to thank all the parents and volunteers for helping make this event a success for the academy and all its swimmers.
